Odoo when budget is constrained, processes are mostly standard and you want strong customization without per-user license shock - typical for African SMEs and mid-market manufacturers. NetSuite when you need a polished cloud ERP with strong multi-entity and multi-currency, often for scale-ups going regional. SAP S/4HANA or Business One when you're a large enterprise with global parents requiring SAP, or when the industry-specific modules genuinely save you years of customization.

Configure first. Every customization is a future upgrade tax. We run a structured fit-gap workshop and push back hard on customizations that exist because 'we have always done it this way' - changing the process is usually cheaper than changing the ERP. We reserve customization for genuine competitive differentiators or local regulatory requirements (Ghana VAT, Nigerian FIRS, KRA in Kenya) that the vendor hasn't covered.

Odoo for a single-entity SME: 4 to 7 months. NetSuite mid-market with two or three subsidiaries: 8 to 14 months. SAP S/4HANA enterprise rollout: 18 to 36 months phased by module. These ranges assume executive sponsorship, decisions made on time, and clean master data. The biggest delay we see isn't technology - it's organizations that haven't agreed on a chart of accounts.

Change management is built into the engagement, not bolted on. We identify process owners early, run super-user training programs, build role-based learning paths, and design phased go-lives so departments are not all overwhelmed simultaneously. We track adoption metrics post-launch (transaction volume by module, support ticket trends) because an ERP nobody uses is a USD 500k filing cabinet.

Yes. A common pattern: SAP or Oracle at the group level for consolidation, Odoo or NetSuite at the country level for local operations and statutory compliance. We design the integration layer (typically via Workato, Boomi or custom middleware) so transactions flow upward without forcing local teams into a tool designed for HQ. This pattern saves significant license cost and accelerates new-market launches.

We localize for VAT (Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa), withholding tax, e-invoicing (Nigerian FIRS, Kenyan eTIMS), and local statutory reports. For payroll we integrate with local providers or build country modules covering SSNIT, NHIS, PAYE and NHIL in Ghana, PAYE and NHIF in Kenya, and equivalent regimes elsewhere. We treat compliance as a non-negotiable baseline, not a phase-two enhancement.

If your processes are not yet stable, you'll be paving a cow path - fix the process first, then automate. If leadership cannot commit dedicated business analysts and process owners for the project duration, the implementation will stall regardless of partner skill. We have advised clients to defer ERP projects until they had the right internal team in place. The technology is rarely the binding constraint.
