Building Africa's first carbon registry

Adaobi: Ama, tell us why Africa needed its own registry. Dr Owusu: Because for thirty years our forests have been monetized for carbon and the money has not stayed here. Verra and Gold Standard are headquartered in the global north. The accounting standards reflect priorities that did not include African development goals. When carbon-credit volume started growing toward the meaningful scale a few years ago, several African governments started asking: why are we exporting our climate value at someone else's terms? CarbonLedger Africa is one answer to that question. Kwame: Talk to us about verification at source. Dr Owusu: Every credit in our registry is tied to a specific project, a specific location, a specific monitoring methodology. We push sensors into the field — satellite-backed, but also ground-truthed by rangers with phones. The sensor data flows through a pipeline that hashes every reading on receipt and writes it to an append-only store. The verification body sees the raw stream. The buyer sees the aggregated credit. The provenance from buyer to sensor reading is reconstructable in five clicks. That auditability is the product. Adaobi: Why Postgres and not a blockchain? Dr Owusu: Because we wrote down our actual requirements. We needed append-only storage. Postgres handles that. We needed cryptographic verifiability. We added Merkle trees on top. We needed multi-party trust. We added independent observers with read access. None of that required a blockchain. A blockchain would have added cost, latency, and a recruiting problem. We have no regrets. Kwame: Four ministries? Dr Owusu: Four ministries, two regional bodies, and the African Development Bank as an observer. Coordinating that took a year. We hired a former diplomat as our head of partnerships. Worth every cedi. Adaobi: What does the next decade look like? Dr Owusu: Maturation. The voluntary market becomes regulated. The price floor rises. The verification standards converge. Our job is to be the credible African voice in that convergence and to make sure that when standards harden, African projects are on equal footing. We are bullish. Kwame: Advice to climate founders? Dr Owusu: Pick a hard problem. Pick a problem where the engineering matters. Climate is full of consulting work disguised as software. We need software disguised as software.
